Back in the olden days (between Elizabethan-Victorian era) Flowers were used for a LOT of things. And over time they eventually developed a language all their own. Wolfsbane meaning danger (likely because it's poisonous to humans) roses meaning the giving and acceptance of love, lilies for funerals/death, etc. and I wonder how much time passed before it was both widely common and accepted that these flowers meant these things?
I'm already playing around with using them and other flower arrangement languages for my future stories. I think it'd be pretty cool!
